Transportation & Traffic
Traveling by taxi is by far the most convenient way to travel around the city, although this can be rather expensive and local cyclos are a cheaper way to complete short journeys.
Good and reliable taxi brand in Hanoi:
Mai Linh Taxi, Hanoi tourist taxi, Hanoi ACB taxi. Hanoi Taxi CP
Also be careful and aware to take a metered taxi or “xe om –motorbike taxi” which is always a small car parking on the street and chasing, asking people to take their service.
Be careful with the taxi and minibus mafia at the airport shuttle unwitting tourist to the wrong hotel
The city’s traffic is dense and unrelenting so please make sure you keep an eye on the traffic light even it already turned green but still have to be careful when you cross over the street – the better idea is that just keep walking and wave up your hand to show the driver some signs.
Money
The official currency of Vietnam is the dong (VN) and can be used for all purchases. US dollars are also widely accepted and can be used throughout the city. There are a good number of ATMs located around Hanoi and these machines issue dong notes. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants.
Vietnamese currency is quite big with lots of number, make sure you don’t get confuse with its value and color.
Dangers & annoyances
It is very easy to get lost when you get around the old quarter, almost the street is really small and cut through each other without any fixed instruction. Please make sure you got a local map, or hotel card to contact in case you cannot find the way back or try to ask for some people on the street for the direction ( there is big number of people who can speak good and basic English surround the old quarter)
Hanoi is bargain able city, so make sure you try to bargain with every type of single item.
With your belongings, make sure you keep everything right in front of you such as wallet, pocket, camera, cell phone, and passport and so on.
Do watch out for pickpockets around market areas and unwanted “helpers” in crowded transport terminals – particularly when boarding night train or bus.
Watch out for friendly, smooth – talking strangers approaching you around the Hoan Kiem Lake. There are many variations, but sometimes there son-artists pose as students and suggest a drink or a meal. Your new friend may then suggest a visit to karaoke bar, snake-meat restaurant or some other venue and before you know it you’re presented with a bill for hundreds of dollar’s bill.
Watch out and say no to any suspect person and the person who carry some fruits stuff and asking to take the photo for free or people who is selling lighter, book or cap. Of course, you do not want to buy a fake lighter or guide book for more than $30, just stay away from these types of people.
Food & Restaurant
Currently, there are quite big amount of restaurant in Hanoi and especially in the old quarter. It is fairly easy to find a restaurant but to find a good one with the best price; it would be a big challenge for the traveler who has the first time in Hanoi. The fact is that fancy restaurant might look good with the outlook with acceptable service but the food is just alright to compare with the food in the small restaurants on the street or the place where a lot of people sit on the tiny chair and enjoy the meal – drink. Bun cha, Pho and Cha ca La vong are the tops choice for you.
